Physician assistants are healthcare providers who work under the direction and supervision of physicians. They provide routine diagnostic and therapeutic tests, and offer preventative care. Physician assistants work in a variety of settings and in a number of different specialties. Physician assistants duties often include:
Taking medical histories and performing physical examinations.
Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays.
Diagnosing, treating, and monitoring acute and chronic illnesses.
Treating injuries by suturing, casting, or splinting.
Prescribing medications and other treatments.
Providing patient and family education.
Providing appropriate referral to physicians and other health care team members.
